Beware of Fake Mentors – A Story from the Art World

At LuxoAcademy, we often share experiences that are tough but real. No sugarcoating, no fairy tales. Today, we bring you the story of one of our students – in his own words.

I had a mentor, a millionaire and a well-known art dealer. I took art lessons from him, he showed me what to buy, explained everything in detail. We spent evenings over wine, I trusted him, admired him. He was my role model, my mentor, my friend. I was selling a lot of artworks, business was going well, I had many clients, I was making money – and I thought it was thanks to him.

Until I discovered the truth. Once, twice, three times… I realized he had been selling me overpriced artworks, hundreds of thousands above their real value. And I was the fool who bought them. I thought I was building a business, but in reality, I was walking into traps. In the end, I was left with overpriced pieces stuck in storage and a loss of about €600,000.

I regret that I didn’t study properly and tried to “learn on the go” from life – like most of us do.

The lesson? Not everyone who looks like a professional or mentor really wants the best for you. Some just play for themselves, and you’re only a tool for their profit.

So let me be clear: don’t rely only on one person. Learn for yourself. Become an equal player. That’s why LuxoAcademy exists – so you’ll never again have to depend blindly on someone else. In this world, no one will protect you but your own knowledge.
